Welcome Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening Milwaukie, OR

A woman inspects a visible mouth ulcer, a potential symptom of oral cancer, emphasizing the importance of oral cancer screening. An oral cancer screening is a visual and physical examination of the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, and surrounding tissues, performed to detect early signs of cancer or precancerous conditions. During your exam at Michael Regan, DMD Family, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, our doctors will look for abnormalities such as unusual sores, discolored patches, lumps, or changes in tissue texture that might otherwise go unnoticed. In many cases, these early indicators cause no pain and produce no obvious symptoms, which is exactly why a professional screening is so valuable.

When Is a Screening Performed?

Oral cancer screenings are typically performed as part of a routine dental exam. Because our team sees patients on a regular schedule, we are well positioned to catch changes in oral tissue over time. In most cases, no additional appointment is needed, and the screening takes only a few minutes to complete. If either of our doctors notices something that warrants a closer look, we will discuss next steps with you directly and refer you to a specialist if needed. The goal is always to act on concerning findings quickly, before a problem has a chance to progress.

Why Early Detection Matters

Oral cancer is one of the most survivable cancers when it is diagnosed early. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate is significantly higher for localized diagnoses compared to cases that have spread to other tissues or lymph nodes. Despite this, oral cancer is frequently diagnosed at a late stage because early warning signs are easy to overlook without a trained eye.

Regular screenings give our doctors the opportunity to identify suspicious areas before they develop into something serious. When treatment begins at an early stage, it is generally less invasive and more effective. That outcome starts with detection, and detection starts in the dental chair.

Oral Cancer Affects Patients of All Ages

There is a common misconception that oral cancer is primarily a concern for older adults. While it is true that risk increases with age, and senior dental care appropriately includes a strong emphasis on screening, oral cancer does not discriminate by age. Cases among younger adults have risen in recent decades, driven in part by HPV-related cancers of the oropharynx. Patients in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are being diagnosed at higher rates than previous generations.

Certain behaviors increase risk at any age, including tobacco use in any form, heavy alcohol consumption, excessive sun exposure to the lips, and a personal or family history of oral cancer. However, a significant number of people diagnosed with oral cancer have none of these risk factors, which reinforces why routine screening is appropriate for everyone, not just those with obvious vulnerabilities.

What To Expect During the Exam

The screening itself is straightforward and comfortable. Our doctors will visually inspect the inside of your mouth, including the cheeks, gums, tongue, floor of the mouth, and the back of the throat. They will also feel along the jaw and neck for any unusual lumps or swollen lymph nodes. You may be asked to move your tongue or open wider to allow a better view of certain areas. The entire process is quick and non-invasive.
