Dental Exam

Beautiful female patient of Michael Regan, DMD Family, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry getting a dental exam in Milwaukie, ORDental hygiene is essential, and regular dental exams help ensure you stay on top of oral healthcare. They can help identify dental problems you may have or may be at risk of developing. You can prevent a lot of serious oral health issues by identifying them early on. You should visit Mike Regan, DMD twice every year to get an in-depth dental exam to maintain optimal hygiene. We at Michael Regan, DMD Family, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry can help your protect your oral health and prevent any dental issues that may be on the horizon.

What Does a Dental Exam Include?

A dental exam involves a thorough dental cleaning of your teeth. Over the counter products are unable to target and eliminate plaque from the mouth completely. Brushing twice a day, regular flossing, and rinsing your teeth with mouthwash can help keep plaque build-up to a minimum, but you still need to get your teeth and gums cleaned by a professional twice every year. Besides cleaning, the dentist will also analyze your teeth and gums to evaluate whether you are at risk of developing gum diseases, tooth decay, or any other problem. They will also examine your mouth, neck, and surrounding area to ensure there are no abnormalities. A dentist may recommend an x-ray if they feel like you are at risk of developing an abnormality.

What Can Dental Exams Identify?

No matter how careful you are with your dental cleaning routine, there are certain diseases that you can only prevent if you detect their signs early on. Dental exams help you do that. When a dentist examines your teeth and gums, they are not just looking for surface-level issues such as plaque build-up and cavity presence. They are also looking for signs and symptoms of certain diseases. Often these diseases impact not just your dental health but your overall health.
•  Rheumatoid arthritis – inflammation in the gums or the development of gingivitis, a type of gum disease, is a sign of rheumatoid arthritis.
•  Diabetes – swelling in the gums, bleeding, persistent bad breath, gums pulling away from the teeth are just some of the indicators that a person has diabetes.
•  Lupus – Periodontal gum disease, mouth sores, cracked lips, yeast infections, and Sjogren's syndrome (drying out of salivary and tear glands) are some of the symptoms of lupus.
•  Leukemia – mouth ulcers, bleeding and swelling in the gums, and the onslaught of multiple infections in the mouth are all symptoms of leukemia.
•  Immuno-compromised – development of viral and fungal infections in the mouth as well as the development of mouth ulcers are some oral manifestations visible in immune-compromised patients.

Early symptoms of a lot of these diseases that affect overall health first make an appearance in the mouth. Regular dental exams can help you identify these diseases at an early stage besides helping you save a lot of money spent on dental fillings and tooth extractions.
